About 80 species, native to Central and South America. Six species are cultivated in southern Africa, including the familiar Tropaeolum majus (Nasturtium).

Tropaeolum majus (Nasturtium)

 Native to the Andes in South America, from Bolivia to Colombia. A common weed in Cape Town, in gardens and along roadsides and riverbanks but is not yet listed as a naturalised species on Plants of Southern Africa checklist.

Tropaeolum minus

Native to Peru and Ecuador.

 

Tropaeolum peltophorum

Native from Colombia to Peru.

 

Tropaeolum pentaphyllum

Native from Bolivia to Argentina.

 

Tropaeolum peregrinum (Canary creeper)

Native to Peru.

 

Tropaeolum pubescens

Native to Colombia and Ecuador.
