There are about 120 species worldwide (native to tropical
Asia and America) of which two, Bambusa
balcooa
(Common bamboo) and Bambusa vulgaris (see
Flora of Zimbabwe), have become naturalised in southern
Africa. An additional six species are cultivated in the region.
