Twenty-seven genera and about 935 species worldwide, of which eight genera and 39 species are native to southern Africa, and one genus (Passiflora) and eight species are naturalised in the region. An additional six species are cultivated in the region. Turneraceae was previously considered to be a separate family, but it has now been merged into Passifloraceae.

Adenia

Of the 93 species (tropical regions worldwide), 14 are native to southern Africa.

Basananthe

All 25 species are African and nine are native to southern Africa.

Paropsia

Of the 11 species (Madagascar, Africa through to Malaysia), two are native to southern Africa.

 

Piriqueta

About 20 species (mainly South America, warm regions of Africa and Madagascar), of which one, Piriqueta capensis, is native to southern Africa. Previously placed in Turneraceae.

 

Schlechterina

One species: Schlechterina mitostemmatoides, native from tropical East Africa through to NE KwaZulu-Natal.

 

Streptopetalum

Three species (African), of which one, Streptopetalum serratum, occurs in southern Africa. Previously placed in Turneraceae.

Tricliceras

About 11 species (tropical and subtropical Africa), of which 10 species are native to southern Africa. Previously placed in Turneraceae.

Turnera

About 100 species (mainly South American), of which one, Turnera oculata, is native to southern Africa (northern Namibia). Previously placed in Turneraceae.

Passiflora

About 525 species (mainly American but about 20 species in SE China and Australasia). About 14 species have been introduced to southern Africa of which eight have become naturalised and of these, four are declared Category 1 invasive plants in South Africa. The Purple granadilla or Passion fruit Passiflora edulis is cultivated for its fruit but has also become naturalised.

There are no exotic genera other than Passiflora that are recorded as being cultivated in southern Africa (Glen 2002).
