Twenty-two genera and 656 species (worldwide), with two genera and 12 species native to southern Africa, two genera and 17 species naturalised, and a further five genera and 22 species that are cultivated in the region.

Epilobium (willow-herb genus)

There are 185 species worldwide, North America having the most species. Four species are native to southern Africa.

Ludwigia

Eighty-five species worldwide (mainly South America), with eight species native to southern Africa, one that is naturalised, and a further species that is cultivated in the region.

Gaura

All 21 species are native to North America. Two species have become naturalised in southern Africa and a further species is cultivated in the region.

 

Oenothera (evening primroses)

The 125 species are all native to North and South America but many of them have become naturalised in the Old World. In southern Africa, 15 species have become established and a further three species and one hybrid are cultivated in the region.

Zauschneria californica

Native to western USA and Mexico.

 

Boisduvalia densiflora

Native from western Canada to Mexico.

 

Clarkia

Over 40 species, native mainly to North America but one species is native to South America; two species are cultivated in southern Africa.

 
Fuchsia (fuchsias)

About 100 species, native to Central and South America, and New Zealand. More than 8000 hybrids and cultivars have been developed for their distinctive and attractive flowers. Twelve species cultivated in southern Africa as well as numerous hybrids and cultivars.

 

Lopezia racemosa

Native from Mexico to El Salvador.
