About 20 species (tropical and subtropical regions, mainly in North America), with four species native to southern Africa and a further three species that are naturalised in the region.

 

Commicarpus

About 32 species (widespread but mainly Africa), of which nine species are native to southern Africa.

 

Phaeoptilum

One species: Phaeoptilum spinosum, which is endemic to southern Africa.

 

Pisonia

About 50 species (tropical and subtropical regions). Pisonia aculeata is native to southern Africa and Pisonia umbellifera (Bird lime tree) (native to Indian Ocean islands) is cultivated in the region.
