Family: Ginkgophyta

Life > eukaryotes > Archaeoplastida > Chloroplastida > Charophyta > Streptophytina > Plantae (land plants) > Tracheophyta (vascular plants) > Euphyllophyta > Lignophyta (woody plants) > Spermatophyta (seed plants) > Gymnospermae

This group of plants flourished in the mid-Mesozoic (about 140 million years ago) but diminished in the later Mesozoic and Tertiary. Seven genera have been recorded from fossils but only one of them, Ginkgo, has survived to the present, represented by a single species, Ginkgo biloba (Maidenhair Tree) which is native to China.
