Erica coccinea Erica coccinea

Erica coccinea, Kleinmond Nature Reserve. On right are dissected flowers showing how the anthers are joined together. When a bird probes into the flower, the anthers break apart exposing the elongate pores through which the dry pollen explodes. Much of the pollen lands on the bird's face; the bird flies to another flower where the pollen is rubbed off onto the stigma, thus effecting pollination. [photo H. Robertson, Iziko ©]
