Submerged, perennial marine plants. Five genera and 16 species (tropical seas), with four genera and five species off the coast of northern KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, and Mozambique.

Cymodocea

Two species indigenous in southern Africa, both recorded from Mozambique.

Halodule

Seven species (widespread in tropical seas), with one species, Halodule uninervis (Narrowleaf seagrass), found off the coast of northern KwaZulu-Natal and further north off Mozambique. A favourite food of the Dugong.

Syringodium

One species native to southern Africa - Syringodium isoetifolium - recorded from Mozambique.

Thalassodendron

Two species (coasts of E Africa, E Malaysia and Australia), with Thalassodendron ciliatum occurring in the Indian Ocean, including off the coast of northern KwaZulu-Natal and Mozambique.
