Seventeen genera and about 460 species worldwide (lowland tropics and subtropics), with three genera and four species native to southern Africa. In addition, there are four genera and four species that are cultivated in the region.

Genera native to southern Africa

Hirtella

There are 103 species worldwide, of which one Hirtella zanzibarica is native to southern Africa (Mozambique). See Flora of Mozambique.

 

Maranthes

Twelve species globally, most of which occur in tropical Africa. Maranthes goetzeniana is native to southern Africa (Zimbabwe and Mozambique) - see Flora of Zimbabwe.

 

Parinari

About 43 species (tropics and subtropics worldwide) of which two are native to southern Africa.

Dactyladenia

About 27 species, native to tropical Africa. Dactyladenia barteri has been cultivated in southern Africa.

 

Licania

About 171 species, native to tropical America and Africa. Licania tomentosa (Oiti, Da Praia), from Brazil, is cultivated in southern Africa.

 

Lyonothamnus

Native to South America and West Africa. Lyonothamnus floribundus from California has been cultivated in southern Africa.
