There are 79 genera and about 2300 species (cosmopolitan, especially Mediterranean region and southern Africa), of which 20 genera and 410 species are native to southern Africa. An additional 14 genera and 38 species are cultivated in the region.

Craterocapsa

Five species native to southern Africa.

 

Cyphia

Sixty-five species are native to southern Africa. Previously in the Lobeliaceae.

 

Dobrowskya

One species native to southern Africa - Dobrowskya laevicaulis.

 

Grammatotheca

One species: Grammatotheca bergiana, occurring in both South Africa and Australia. Previously in the Lobeliaceae.

 

Gunillaea

Two species (Africa and Madagascar), both of which occur in southern Africa.

 

Laurentia

Native to Australia. One species is native to southern Africa - Laurentia minuta. Another species, Laurentia petraea, is cultivated in southern Africa (native to Australia).

 

Lobelia

About 300 species (cosmopolitan, mainly tropics and subtropics), of which 66 species are native to southern Africa. An additional seven species are cultivated in the region. Previously in the Lobeliaceae.

Merciera

Six species, all endemic to the Western Cape, South Africa.

Microcodon

Three species, endemic to Western Cape and Northern Cape, South Africa.

 

Monopsis

About 20 species (Africa), of which 18 are native to southern Africa. Previously in the Lobeliaceae.

Monopsis lutea

Namacodon

One species, Namacodon shinzianum, which is endemic to the mountains of central Namibia.

 

Prismatocarpus

The 30 species are endemic to southern Africa (mainly Western Cape, also Northern Cape and Eastern Cape).

 

Rhigiophyllum

One species: Rhigiophyllum squarrosum, endemic to the Western Cape.  

 

Roella

The 20 species are all endemic to southern Africa (almost all in the Western Cape, but one occurring in the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal).

 

Siphocodon

Two species, endemic to the Western Cape.

 

Theilera

Two species: Theilera guthriei and Theilera robusta, endemic to Western Cape and Eastern Cape.

 

Treichelia

One species: Treichelia longebracteata, endemic to the Western Cape (specifically Cape Peninsula).  

 

Unigenes

One species native to southern Africa - Unigenes humifusa.

 

Wahlenbergia

About 200 species (mainly southern Hemisphere), of which 174 are native to southern Africa. 

Wahlenbergia ?androsacea, Nieuwoudtville (Northern Cape, South Africa).

Wimmerella

Ten species, all endemic to southern Africa. Previously in the Lobeliaceae.

Native to Australia.

 

Legousia speculum-veneris

Native to Europe.

 

Muschia aurea

Native to Madeira.

 

Platycodon grandiflorus (Balloon flower, Chinese bellflower)

Native to China, Korea and Japan.

 

Symphyandra hoffmannii

Native to Bosnia.

 

Trachelium caeruleum

Native from Portugal to Italy.
