Twenty species, native to Central and South America; one species is naturalised in southern Africa and a further four species are cultivated in the region.

Pereskia aculeata (Barbados gooseberry)

Native to tropical America. A serious invasive species in the coastal forests of KwaZulu-Natal and also naturalised in the Eastern Cape, Gauteng and Limpopo. It is a declared Category 1 invasive plant in South Africa. See Flora of Zimbabwe.
