Twenty genera and 273 species are native to southern Africa, two genera and seven species naturalised and 10 genera and 20 species cultivated.

Amellus

The 12 species are endemic to southern Africa.

 

Aster

About 250 species, found mainly in the northern hemisphere. There are 17 indigenous and one naturalised species in southern Africa, with an additional seven species cultivated in the region.

 

Chrysocoma

A total of 21 species, all found in southern Africa.

 

Conyza

About 60 species found worldwide in warm areas. There are 14 species native to southern Africa, with an additional four species naturalised.

 

Dichrocephala

Four species, native to tropical and subtropical Africa, Madagascar and Asia. Dichrocephala integrifolia and Dichrocephala chrysanthemifolia are the only species found in southern Africa.  

 

Engleria

There are two species, native to Angola and Namibia.

 

Felicia

Of the 83 species, 80 are native to southern Africa. The other species are native to other parts of Africa and to Saudi Arabia.

 

Grangea

There are 10 species, native to Africa, Madagascar and Asia, of which two occur in southern Africa.  

 

Gymnostephium

All eight species are endemic to the Western Cape.

 

Gyrodoma

One species, endemic to coastal Mozambique: Gyrodoma hispida. See Flora of Mozambique.

 

Heteromma

The three species are endemic to southern Africa.

 

Mairia

The three species are endemic to the Western Cape.

 

Microglossa

About 10 species, native to tropical and southern Africa, with two occurring in southern Africa.

 

Nidorella

About 13 species, found mainly in Africa but with one species in Madagascar. There are 11 species in southern Africa.

 

Nolletia

About 10 species, native to Africa, with eight occurring in southern Africa.

 

Poecilolepis

The two species are endemic to southern Africa.

 

Polyarrhena

The four species are endemic to the Western Cape.

 

Psiadia

About 60 species, native to Africa, Madagascar and Asia, with one species, Psiadia punctulata occurring in southern Africa.

 

Pteronia

About 70 species, mainly found in southern Africa. Evidently also found in Australia.

Zyrphelis

The 10 species are native to Africa, with nine of them found in southern Africa.

Baccharis

The 400 or so species are native to North and South America. Baccharis pingraea has become naturalised in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

 

Erigeron

There are about 200 species, native to North and South America and Eurasia. One species, Erigeron karwinskianus (see Flora of Zimbabwe) is a garden plant that has become naturalised in southern Africa. Erigeron speciosus is also cultivated in southern Africa.

Native to the western USA and Mexico.

One unidentified species cultivated.

 

Calocephalus platycephalus

Native to southern Australia.

 

Olearia

Three species cultivated.

 

Podachaenium eminens

Native to central America.

 

Solidago canadensis (Canadian goldenrod)

The 400 or so species are native to North and South America. Baccharis pingraea has become naturalised in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

 

Townsendia montana

Native to south-western USA.

 

Vittadinia triloba

Native to Australia.
