About 100 species, native to the tropics and subtropics of the Old World. Two species are native to southern Africa and a further species is cultivated in the region.

Native distribution includes Central African Republic, DRC, Zambia, Tanzania, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana and South Africa (Limpopo).
