Cookson, Harold (1876-1969)

Farmer and amateur butterfly and moth collector. Lived in Muden, Natal and then in the Vumba Mountains in what was then Rhodesia.

Went to school at Harrow.

Through to 1907 travelled most of the continents and through Central Africa, Uganda and Zaire to Zambia.

Did mineral prospecting in Zambia; also big game hunting.

Did sheep farming in Western Australia.

1946

 

He and his two sons bought a fruit farm in Muden, Natal. Collected Lepidoptera extensively in the area.

1957

 

Sold the fruit farm and moved to the lower Vumba Mountains in Rhodesia. Collected Lepidoptera, especially light trapping of hawk moths. Son David gradually took over.

1966

 

Son David died tragically.

Housed in the Transvaal Museum and Durban Natural Science Museum.
