Coates, Thomas James Dagless (1920-1972) 

Worked on citrus, studied the taxonomy of Collembola, and studied the biology of mites. Mainly worked in the Plant Protection Research Institute but in last couple of years was at the South African Museum.

Born in Addo on 15 September.

Matriculated from St Andrews College, Grahamstown.

1938

 

Started studying medicine at the University of London.

1940-1945

 

Active service in Second World War. Afterwards returned to family citrus farm near Addo.

1955

 

Joined citrus research station at Addo as technical assistant. Became interested in mites on citrus.

1962

 

Transferred to Plant Protection Research Institute in Pretoria.

1964

 

Became a senior technician in the PPRI and passed final year for B.Sc in Entomology and Zoology.

1966

 

Promoted to Professional Officer in PPRI.

1967

 

Awarded M.Sc for thesis on the taxonomy of Collembola.

1967

 

Promoted to Senior Professional Officer in PPRI.

1970

 

Registered for Ph.D at Rand Afrikaans University. Thesis was on mite biology and control.

Joined South African Museum.

6 Jun 1972

 

Died shortly after completing Ph.D.

Specimens

Specimens housed mainly in National Collection of Insects but also in the Iziko SA Museum.
