Found worldwide, with five genera and 12 species native to southern Africa.

 

Subfamily: Dentridactylinae

Occurs in Africa south of the Sahara, Asia, south-eastern Australia, and northern South America.

 
 

Bruntridactylus

Twelve species, native to Africa and Asia, with one species, Bruntridactylus mocambicus native to southern Africa (Mozambique).

 
 

Dentridactylus

Four species, occurring in northern South America, South Africa and south-eastern Australia. One species, Dentridactylus raggei, native to southern Africa.

 

Subfamily: Tridactylinae

Occurs worldwide except for Antarctica and north temperate regions.

 
 

Afrotridactylus

Seven species, native to Africa and Mozambique with two species, Afrotridactylus meridianus and Afrotridactylus pallidus, native to southern Africa.

 
 

Tridactylus

Twelve species, with localised distributions in South America, Africa, Asia and Australia. One species, Tridactylus capensis, native to southern Africa.

 
 

Xya

Fifty-four species, known from Africa, Madagascar, Tristan de Cunha (Xya subantarctica), Europe, Asia and Australia, with seven species native to southern Africa.
