A total of 30 species worldwide, four of which are native to southern African seas.

Information from Monniot et al. (2001) unless otherwise indicated. Polycitor psammophorus (nomen dubium) is excluded because it is not possible to place this species on the basis of the inadequate description. Global figures are from World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS).

Polycitor africanus

A common species along the east coast of Africa, including Tanzania, Madagascar, Mozambique and South Africa (KwaZulu-Natal).

 

Polycitor cuneatus

Recorded off Durban at a depth of 411-450 m.

 

Polycitor nitidus

Recorded from Durban. Description of species inadequate.

 

Polycitor porrecta

[= Tetrazona porrecta]

Recorded from Oudekraal on the Cape Peninsula at a depth of 8-9 m.
