Distribution and habitat
Breeds between 60-75° North from north-western Europe to
the Bering Strait, heading south in the non-breeding season to the area from
West Africa to eastern China, while a vagrant to southern Africa. Here it has
been recorded at Swakopmund, Namibia in December 1998, Savuti, Botswana in
February 1987, Leeupan, Gauteng from May-August 1974 and Richard's Bay, KwaZulu-Natal
in February 1987. It generally prefers freshwater inland wetlands, especially
with mud patches among low growing vegetation.
