Distribution and habitat

Occurs from southern Angola and Zambia to southern Africa, specifically northern Namibia and Botswana. In the non-breeding season it occupies reedbeds and other dense vegetation along rivers, lakes and the borders of marshes. In the breeding season it is much more picky about habitats, preferring seasonally flood aquatic vegetation, such as Long-awned water grass (Echinochloa stagnina).

Breeding

  • The nest is oval-shaped with a side-top entrance, built of dry and live grass, together with plant down, which is added to the side, roof and interior. It is typically placed about 30-40cm above water, in a grass tuft concealed by taller grasses.
  • Egg-laying season is from November-April.
  • It lays 2-3 eggs, which are incubated by both sexes for probably 12-13 days.

Threats

Not threatened.
