Distribution and habitat

Occurs from southern North America to central South America, although juveniles occasionally cross the Atlantic Ocean. It is a rare vagrant to the coast of the Western Cape and central Namibia, generally preferring estuaries and coastal lagoons.

Food 

Its diet consists mainly of fish, amphibians and invertebrates.

Threats

Not threatened.
