Some brachycerid species encountered in southern Africa

 

Brachycerus ornatus. Red-spotted Lily Weevil, 25-45mm.  Adults feed on lily, Ammocharis coranica. Eggs are laid in burrows next to the bulbs. Larvae live in the bulbs and pupate in the soil. [image by M. Picker & C. Griffiths ©, from Field Guide to Insects of South Africa, used with permission].
